Swiss Side Aero Tip - High Socks Rule

Swiss Side Aero Tip - High Socks Rule

TRUE OR FALSE? Higher socks are more aerodynamic

TRUE. We’ve said it already and we’ll say it again, wind doesn’t like skin. So covering up is better for your aerodynamic performance.

For UCI legal competitions, sock height is limited. For non-UCI legal races such as Ironman triathlons, long socks or calf guards can be worn to reduce drag. Rough materials, with a texture, add a “turbulent boundary layer” which can increase efficiency in the same way a textured tyre or skinsuit are faster than smoother surfaces.

Inside story: we tested Swiss Side boss JP in the wind tunnel. Wearing rough material compression socks gave him a 6W benefit at 45km/h (3W @35km/h) and he said they help him with muscle fatigue during the run as well. So he not only improved his aerodynamic efficiency, he also gained on overall performance.
