First race of the year takes place this Sunday in East London – The Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City is an important test on the way to an early long-distance competition

East London. Michael Raelert is looking forward to his first competition in 2020. On Sunday, he will start at the Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City in South Africa. The race in East London is the first event in the 2020 Ironman calendar, and the competition marks a premiere for Michael Raelert as well. "I’m in South Africa since the beginning of the new year," says the Rostockian, "I've never been to the Ironman 70.3 Buffalo City before and I'm really looking forward to this competition."

The race on Sunday means a first test on the way into the season for the experienced athlete. “I would like to head into an early long-distance race this year," says Michael Raelert, who has already logged in a good portion of easy training kilometers in South Africa. "I still have a lot of work ahead, especially in running, but I'm curious to see at what stage of fitness I am right now." Moreover, the Rostockian knows that he will face strong rivals on Sunday, the race will become fast right from the start. Among others, the South African Henri Schoemann, who ranked third the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, is an excellent swimmer and racer. Schoeman makes his debut on the Ironman 70.3 distance in Buffalo City.

After three weeks of training in South Africa, the competition on Sunday marks the end of a first long block for Michael Raelert. He wants to use the race as a motivation for the upcoming weeks. "I would like to be in good shape for the long haul soon," says the Rostockian, "and I hope that I can have a positive first race on Sunday."
