Rostockian will start at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon this Sunday – Three-time winner heads into his first competition after a long break in Thailand

Swiss Side Athlete Michael Raelert celebrated three victories in a row at the Laguna Phuket Triathlon from 2015 to 2017, and he now returns to this prestigious race in Thailand. "I'm really happy to be back at this historic competition on Sunday," says the Rostockian. After a long injury-related break, the focus is on the competition-experience itself. "First of all, I have to define my stage of fitness," says Michael Raelert, who came to Thailand a few days ago after a training camp in the U.S. "I'm looking forward to the experience of this competition and to a positive race," he says with a look at the upcoming event.

In the past 25 years, the Laguna Phuket Triathlon has always been an attractive competition for many highly decorated athletes just before the end of the year. Numerous top triathletes have been here since the first edition of the race took place in 1994. American Mike Pigg took the men's first two victories in Phuket, moreover the British five-time World Champion Simon Lessing, the Australians Greg Welch and Craig Alexander or the German Jan Frodeno were among the Laguna Phuket Triathlon men’s champions, and on the women’s side famous athletes like Michellie Jones (Australia) or Paula Newby-Fraser (USA) celebrated wins here. In the long history of the race, Michael Raelert was the first man to take three victories in 2017 while Radka Kahlefeldt from the Czech Republic was crowned for a third time on the women’s side in 2012. "I'm really looking forward to starting again in Phuket this Sunday," says Michael Raelert, "it's just a special race."
