A Quick Look Inside The Instrumented Bike:
“One of the numerous functions of the Instrumented Bike is to actively monitor the rider position,” says Jean-Paul Ballard, Swiss Side Technical Director. “Amongst the array of sensors on the bike, the rider’s body position is constantly monitored, which is fundamental to overall aerodynamic performance. We want to know the exact rider body position and height at all times, how often he moves, the effect of wind and other factors impacting his position and thereby the ‘real world’ aerodynamic performance. A range of body positions were mapped in the wind tunnel so that these exact drag numbers can then be directly associated to the body positions measured out on the road. The overall results are then fed back into our ‘Performance Simulation’ tools to predict the true impact on the rider’s performance on the stopwatch where it matters.”
Swiss Side’s unique method of enabling direct correlation of on-road measurements to wind tunnel and CFD data, is a first for the cycling industry. In addition, the data generated from the Instrumented Bike provides a new deeper insight into the true rider movement, the impact on aerodynamics and it’s effect on performance.
