Front wheel aero drag performance with crosswind

  • X axis: Crosswind in degrees. The angle of attack at which the wind arrives from the left or right side is defined in degrees as the Crosswind (yaw) angle. The negative numbers represent the angles when the wind is coming from the left side, the positive numbers represent the angles when the wind is coming from the right side.
  • Y axis: Aero Drag measured in Watts
  • Base drag: The Aero Drag at 0 degrees (wind purely from the front).
  • Thrust: The angle from which the wheel generates negative drag and actually pushes you forwards.
  • Sailing effect: The drag reduction produced with increasing cross-wind angle.
  • We compared different rim depths of the Swiss Side Hadron2 front wheels: 500 (red), 625 (blue), and 800 (grey).

Front wheel aero stability with crosswind

  • X axis: Crosswind in degrees = Crosswind (yaw) angle [°]. The angle of attack at which the wind arrives from the left or right side is defined in degrees as the Crosswind (yaw) angle. The negative numbers represent the angles when the wind is coming from the left side, the positive numbers represent the angles when the wind is coming from the right side.
  • Y axis: Steering moment in Newton Meters
  • The front wheel steering moment is the force that a cyclist feels in the handlebars when crosswinds hit the front wheel. Through our research and extensive testing, we have determined the characteristics which lead to a stable and confident feeling from the front wheel. These are shown in the graph with a close to linear steering moment curve without sudden change at the stall point. The stall point is when the wind angle is too high, and the airflow can no longer stay attached to the wheel.
  • We compared different rim depths of the Swiss Side Hadron2 front wheels: 500 (red), 625 (blue), and 800 (grey).
